Carry Over Enquiry for 24/25

Carry Over Enquiry for 24/25

Please see comms below issued by Human Resources.  We will not action any carry over requests made by individuals or raised outside the process outlined in the comms (in red below).  Managers will be contacted from mid March for details of all their staff's carry over requests.

There is not an opportunity for colleagues to sell back annual leave this year other than in the most exceptional circumstances*, but working with staff-side colleagues we have updated the Leave Policy with more options for staff.
The new policy can be found here and the toolkits to support are on the intranet (via the homepage How we work > How to guides > HR toolkits > Annual leave and special leave templates and toolkits.

  • As always, where there are special circumstances colleagues can carry over up to five days of leave (pro rata hours for part-time colleagues) to the following financial year, subject to senior manager approval.

  • New to the policy is an option for colleagues (employed for more than 12 months) to bank up to an additional five days (also pro rata) for a new extended holiday scheme.

  • *In extremely exceptional circumstances, colleagues can sell back and be paid for up to five days annual leave (pro rata), again with approval. However, this is not routinely encouraged and must only be applied in the most exceptional cases. This is because annual leave is there to support colleagues’ wellbeing and it’s important you take the leave for the break and rest you need.
Exceptional circumstances this year includes when colleagues have not taken leave to ensure there is safe clinical staffing cover during periods of industrial action.

Remember, it’s statutory for colleagues to take 20 days (pro rata) of annual leave each year.

These same principles apply for medical and dental staff who have leave years running from April to March. These staff can view their annual leave on the Medirota App or the CLWRota App for anaesthetic staff or speak to their local rota co-ordinator who will advise.

What next?

If you’d like to carry over leave this year, please discuss with your line manager as soon as possible.

Line managers will be contacted by the ESNEFT roster team towards the end of March and managers will be responsible for advising roster colleagues on agreed carry over requests for all colleagues. Individuals should not raise their own request - the roster team will manage this directly with managers and approved carry over will be uploaded to the Healthroster system in April.

To apply for sell back under exceptional circumstances, contact your
HR business partner.
